WA Prison Registers

There are a number of Fremantle Prison registers on Ancestry that list all convictions for a convict from the register start date onwards. These registers begin in 1888. Links to these records have been added to the web links file of each convict in the register. There is also one register for Newcastle Gaol. You will need access to Ancestry.com. Spotting an index entry will alert you to look in the convict's links file.

Prior to 1888, when Perth Gaol closed, there are two Perth Gaol registers that have details of individual convictions and we are progressively (slowly) adding all these convictions as events on convict pages. There is also a similar register for local prisoners at Fremantle Prison between 1870 & 1877. Have a look at Peter Vigo 6467 if you would like to see an extreme example of both pre 1888 convicts and also post 1888 convictions (look in his links file). Links to the individual convictions (and a few acquittals) will be in the Citations section on the bottom of the convict's page. As of 30.11.2025 we have added about 15% of these records. We will add convict indexes for these registers just to alert you to look for convicts higher up on the convict's page.
